Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who defied a row over her gender eligibility to win Olympic gold, is taking legal action over media reports about leaked medical records, the International Olympic Committee said on Wednesday.

Imane Khelif, the gold medal-winning boxer at the centre of the Olympic gender controversy at Paris 2024, is taking legal action over reports in France that leaked medical documents claim she has male XY chromosomes.

Imane Khelif has lodged a legal complaint over reports that surfaced earlier this week and that claim to have evidence that the boxer has XY chrosomes. The Olympic gold medallist has suffered a barrage of online abuse since competing in Paris.

Khelif filed a legal complaint with the French authorities over the online abuse and harassment she was subjected to during the Games and the IOC said on Wednesday she was now also taking action over new reports which emerged in France earlier this week. It also said it was “saddened” by the abuse Khelif had received since her appearance in Paris.

The boxer took gold in the women’s welterweight competition at this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris amid controversy.

Khelif has long maintained that she was eligible to compete as a female row boxer and condemned the bullying of athletes following her win in Paris.

The Algerian Olympic Committee (COA) has criticized the "ongoing and baseless attacks" on Imane Khelif, after an unverified leaked medical assessment allegedly showed the Paris Olympic boxing gold medalist as having internal testes and no uterus.
