As of Sunday morning, at least 64 people were killed after massive rains from powerful Hurricane Helene left people stranded.

Authorities rushed to airlift supplies and restore communications and roads in flooded Asheville, North Carolina, on Sunday as Florida residents gathered for church services amid the wreckage of Hurricane Helene.

As the death toll and devastation from Hurricane Helene rises, the storm impacts the White House race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

Helene is the eighth Category 4 or 5 Atlantic hurricane to make landfall in the US in the last eight years. That’s as many of these intense hurricanes as hit the US in the prior 57 years.

The Harris campaign accused Trump of a lack of empathy, and the Trump campaign said Harris should visit those affected.
