Typhoon Krathon, packing fierce winds and torrential rainfall, was around 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of the major port city of Kaohsiung on Thursday morning, traveling northeastward at a speed of 4 kph (2.5 mph), according to the island’s Central Weather Administration.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A fire at a hospital in Pingtung County’s Donggang Township left eight dead as Typhoon Krathon battered the streets outside, reports said Thursday (Oct. 3).

The storm has already injured 46 people and forced thousands of evacuations, the authorities said, warning that torrential rain could cause landslides and flooding.
